Piazza Pitti - Oltrarno The big Piazza Pitti is located in the Oltrarno district. The impressive Palazzo Pitti, that towers above the square, was the royal palace of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany; the residence of the Medici family, as well as for the Houses of Lorraine and Savoy. Nowadays there are various museums in the palazzo: the Palatine Gallery with masterpieces of Raffaello and Tiziano, the royal apartments and a gallery of modern art with masterpieces of the exponents of the Macchiaioli movement. Beside the galleries you can also visit the silver museum, the costume gallery (the biggest museum in Italy detailing the history of Italian fashion), the porcelain museum and the carriages museum; lastly there are the magnificent Boboli gardens.
Oltrarno can be considered as the most typical district of Florence. Many tourists just have a short walk through its streets full of artisan shops, art and jeweller’s schools, typical restaurants, shops, markets, ancient churches and buildings. Here one can ‘taste’ the authentic way of the vivacious Florentine lifestyle.
