San Marco - Accademia

The zone
San Marco - Accademia Piazza San Marco, located in the northern part of the historical centre, has a quadrangular shape and belongs to the 15th century. It is surrounded by elegant buildings while the frontage of the San Marco Basilica (after which the square is called) towers above it. The facade of the Basilica, in neoclassical style, dates back to the years 1777-78 when it was carried out by Brother Giovan Battista Paladini.
In the middle of the square there is a green area where one can admire the bronze statue of General Manfredo Fanti (died in Florence), a work of the sculptor Papi, based on a model of Pio Fedi.

The San Marco district is a university quarter; indeed there are the headquarters of many prestigious faculties of Florence: politics, law, arts and literature. Many important streets, as Via Ricasoli, Via dei Servi, Via Santa Reparata, Via San Gallo and Via XXVII Aprile, belong to this district. 
Right in Via Ricasoli there is located one of the most important museums of the city: the Accademia Gallery, a must for every visitor. The galleria hosts Michelangelo’s masterpiece: the statue of David which attracts millions of visitors from all over the world, as well as the Museo degli strumenti musicali (the museum of music instruments), where many manufactured articles of the Academy of Music Luigi Cherubini are exposed.
